Our Special Horses
The horses used in T.H.E. FARM programs are carefully chosen by a designated “Horse Acquisition Committee” for their fitness and suitability. A horse may be loaned or leased to T.H.E. FARM or the horse’s ownership may be transferred directly to T.H.E. FARM.
Preferred characteristics of program horses:
- 13.2 to 15.2 hands
- 9 to 12 years of age
- Serviceable, sound, and capable of bearing a participant’s weight (If a horse is known to have any chronic lameness or illness that inhibits work, the condition must be demonstrably controllable at a reasonable cost with medication or corrective shoeing.)
- Free of cribbing and weaving habits
- Even-tempered, kind-hearted, and level-headed
- Calm under saddle and voice-trained
Do You Have a Horse to Donate?
All horses are accepted on a trial basis, during which time they are evaluated for their suitability. Horses must have a current Coggins test, be up-to-date on vaccinations and worming and be current on dental care.
